Why you Should Start Using Period Underwear Right Now

Updated: Nov 2, 2020

Let’s be honest, it isn't easy being a person with a period. It makes your entire body feel like one big painful, bloated, lazy blob. And that’s just if you're lucky enough to have mild symptoms!! I could talk all day long about how much I HATE my period and believe me sometimes I do. But I’m not here to tell you why periods suck, I’m here to tell you about a total game changer!

A couple of years ago I realised I hadn't been living the most environmentally friendly lifestyle I possibly could. Although I’ve always cared for and loved nature, I wasn't living that way to my best ability. I (like many others) find it hard to let go of the convenience and embrace the eco-friendly! And the fact is, in a society like ours that is constantly throwing ‘BUY BUY BUY CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME’ in your face, the idea of doing your bit for the environment can get lost in the noise. So, when I came to the realisation that I was not doing enough, I started carrying around my keep cup and metal straw. Bringing lunch into work when I could. Saying no to plastic in shops and restaurants. You know, all the basics. But a year ago I decided one huge plastic guilt bubble was still looming over me, and that was all the plastic I was putting out into the world as a person who has periods every month. As I've mentioned in a previous post the average person will use between 12,000 to 16,000 disposable tampons/pads in their lifetime! And although I don't believe in shaming people for their choice of period products and would never ever judge anyone for that choice, I personally found this number problematic and needed to make a change.

I had heard of period cups such as the ‘DivaCup’ and had been told by friends that it worked amazingly well but I just couldn't see myself using one, they're pretty intimidating if you ask me and they sound like a nightmare to use in public. So, I took the plunge and bought a few pairs of 'ModiBodi' period underwear instead. And they are honestly the best thing I have ever spent my money on! Yes, they are expensive, but they are a one-time purchase. I mean the average person will spend more than £18,000 on their period in their lifetime, so period underwear will actually save you money in the long term.

Without trying to sound like an advertisement, period underwear completely eradicates 99% of the problems I have with using the disposable versions. Rashes, bulkiness, the fear of leaking, the awkwardness of changing in public toilets, trying to get to or even find a toilet, the toxic chemicals in pads/tampons, toxic shock syndrome are all things that just disappear when you use period underwear. However, the main reason I made the change was to make a big dent in the plastic I was producing in my daily life. I have now made it almost an entire year without using a single disposable period product and it feels amazing!

Go get on google right now and find yourself some right now, ModiBodi is my personal favourite. They offer a range of cute designs, styles (including non-gender specific styles), colours and vegan options. ModiBodi even has a 'give a pair' scheme where you can donate undies to women shelters in Australia (I'm hoping they'll expand and start donating worldwide). They will change your life! I honestly don’t have anything negative to say. I no longer have the disposable period product guilt bubble floating over me and they've made my periods a whole lot more bearable. It’s a win-win. I've just converted Ruth, come join us!
